Great overview of the bass!
This book is a fantastic overview of what a bass player needs to know. It will not, however, replace the work needed to apply that knowledge to your instrument. You still have to practice 'till you love it and then play 'till you're annoying someone. Do those scales - learn that fret board - if it was easy, everyone would do it.My favorite aspect of the transaction: The backing and sample tracks are a snap to download - they are mp3's that come all in one shot in a ZIP, so if you have a little storage room they are yours for life and you can put them on a player and take them where ever you go.The book is well written and a pretty entertaining read. It is one of the few guitar books I've acquired that will gather dog-ear pages instead of dust.I like it!

An Alright Purchase
This book came with the guitar that my daughter got for her birthday, and while it is very well written, it does not really clarify things for someone who does not know a guitar very well. My daughter has learned more by taking lessons then she had using this book.

Nice learning tool.
Wonderful book for beginners, the book spells out all the correct ways to learn the bass, wish I had this tool back in 1973, I would have continued playing my bass instead of having to learn all over again.

I must be too much of a beginner
I am on page 35 and already lost. Talking about TAB and reading music. Went on YouTube and found the type of tutorial I was after: how to hold the instrument, how to position your hands, how to move your fingers, and first 4 notes to practice.

Not boring
Fun to read. Yes, it can get detailed at times. But, it does not throw you into the deep end right away. Easy lessons in each chapter. Well written. Basics and foundation techniques here. Giving you a rock solid start. Highly recommend it. It's not just a once read. I will be practicing the lessons for the next few weeks.

I own 10 books by this writer, and I don't regret my purchases.
I have a decent sized library of reading material on guitar and music theory, and these books touch on pretty much everything starting at the introductory level, and progressing towards the more advanced. Sometimes the explanations given online for how certain aspects of music work, either skip over essential steps or assume you had some formalized training; which leave me more confused and clueless. Sometimes, I have to watch 3-5 videos just to find a presenter that can simplify a concept to a beginner. I am making moderate but steady progress, and some techniques are still not within my grasp, but I what a great resource these books are. I own an acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, and it is satisfying to have such a reliable resource at my fingertips that breaks things down into simple digestible steps.
