Q: Are these sterilized?

Do not use if you have a sore unless you want an infection. What my pharmacist said anyway. He said use sterile gauze pads.

Q: How long are these plugs, & approximately how big around? Probably hard to measure the diameter, but maybe compare to a pencil or a sharpie marker?

They are about the diameter of a sharpie type marker. They are pliable.

Q: Are these made out of cotton?

Yes they are made of cotton and work perfectly.

Q: When inserted do they swell up ( adsorbing blood)to close off the nostril??

These are 5/16" in diameter and 1.5" long. They will absorb blood, but they do not swell up enough to close off the nostril of an adult. They might work for a child. These would be better described as the cotton things a dentists puts between your cheek and gum when she works on your tooth. I'm still looking for something that works well. What I currently use is a facial tissue folded in fourths lengthwise and rolled tightly and held rolled up with a small rubber band. That makes an absorbent plug 1/2" in diameter and 2" long. Since my nosebleeds come on without notice, I keep several handy for quick use.
