Consider the condition of the impeller. Mine had gotten older and worn. Changing the impeller system was very helpful. Ideal match to original. Fluval canisters are pretty sturdy and reliable. I read somewhere that you should swap out the impeller and gasket once per year just jn case so I buy these parts to do that, but honestly they could probably go longer than that.
